The company was originally started by Alfred Vaughan as a local delivery service with one small Morris truck. Doing business as "Alf Vaughan & Co Ltd", he became successful and over time assembled a fleet of various size trucks capable of handling small packages up to house-size loads. The business fell into decline and eventually went into government supervision. In an effort to save the 64 jobs of its workers, the company was sold in 1997 to a private entity. The new company infused a large amount of capital allowing it to buy 21 new ERF trucks in 2001. Today, the company has a division called Vaughan Waste Management with a large fleet of trash haulaway units seen below. Note how well the graphics have been reproduced by Corgi from the prototype. Vaughan Logistics Ltd also operates a truck repair and repainting facility available to independent truckers.

Vaughan Waste Management (actual truck)
ERF (originally founded in 1933 as E.R. Foden) was purchased in 2000 by MAN of Germany, a maker of huge ocean-going engines for supertankers and oceanliners. The ECS series is one of the most fuel efficient models around and is manufacturered in Middlewich, Cheshire, England. The ECS trucks are in a configuration known as "6x2". That means six drive wheels in the rear and two steering wheels in the front.
Corgi model CC12703 was released in 2001 as part of their their Limited Edition Collectibles series and contains the truck at the very top of this Guide along with a three-axle flatbed trailer featured below. The set, also pictured below, contains a certificate indicating the specific serial number of each model within the limited run of only 3,000 worldwide. This is not a child's plaything; the box clearly states, "For the discerning collector".

The model has the highly detailed features regularly found on Corgi's outstanding 1:50 scale series of vehicles. The colors are true to the prototype and the logos of the company are complete down to the phone number. Details include a clear, readable license plate number on the truck and trailer. The front wheels can be turned to give more realism in a shelf display setting. The outside mirrors and the wind fairing over the windshield come in a sealed plastic bag to be installed by the owner. The model even has curled red and yellow air hose lines that connect to the trailer bringing practical realism to the entire unit.
Corgi has an extensive line of trailers that can be acquired individually by those collectors desiring to have additional stagings. Some trailer options are curtainside, stepside box, dry bulk containers, liquid, skeletal, girder and gooseneck.

Fortunately, there are sellers who break-up complete sets of other Corgi models and makers to sell the individual components and loads. A collector can acquire one trailer like the gooseneck lowboy on the left below and then acquire several different loads to put on a trailer such as the 1:50 scale CAT model on the right below.
3-axle lowboy D11R dozer made by Norscot
For those interested in customizing trucks and trailers, this process is known in Great Britain as "Code 3". Seen below is a one-of-a-kind Code 3 that has been lengthened with two additional drive axles, and, a covered utility box. It would now be classified as a 14x2. I have the 3-axle jeep dolly pictured above fronting a 5-axle lowboy similar to the one pictured that have been re-painted in Vaughan Logistics colors hauling the CAT dozer all behind the truck on the right below. The combinations and possibilities are limitless!
Before After
Not just for the Corgi automotive collector, this unit appeals to everyone sharing the name of this trucking company. If your name is VAUGHAN, this is definitely an acquisition to consider. The vast majority of the sets for sale on ebay are located in Great Britain. Shipping generally runs about 5-7 British Pounds for the regular-sized packages to the United States. All of the sellers in Great Britain I have bought from have been courteous, friendly and willing to pack securely for a safe passage.
Yes, I do own a number of these (including those pictured) and will consider adding more to my collection in the future.
I am not a dealer and I do not sell.
