Almost every home in America has a cordless phone. This is not a news flash, so why am i bothering to write about a subject which at best seems like a dead dog.
The reality is, despite all that cordless phones are capable of doing, they are still under utilized. I realized this two years ago when i was renovating, and stringing phone line from room to room, and i thought to myself 'there must be an easier way.' sure enough, the phone rang, and i had to climb two flights of stairs to tell Jeff that he had a phone call.
It is at this point that i said 'forget this' and went on Ebay to see what i could find. I typed in 'Cordless Phone Intercom' and the rest is history.
I came across the Motorola MD40 generation of phones, which could communicate from handset to handset like an intercom or walkie talkies, be used to monitor a room, and best of all, required one phone jack from a centrally located base station. All they needed was an electrical outlet.
Well that was it. The MD40 series of phones was on the way, and the phone cord was out the window. I kept adding hansets until I reached the maximum of four which the system could handle. I later upgraded to the MD60 series of phones, which could accomidate six handsets, so each resident had his own handset, and it allowed us to put hansets in the new luxury bathrooms we built (no more hallway waddles or bath interruptions.)
Little peices of technology like this are all over the place, its just a matter of looking for them. Also, there are systems that convert your cell phone into a home phone system, also available from Motorola. Free nights and weekends anyone?
