Installing & Maintaining Copper Backsplash Tiles
Copper backsplashes or copper tile accents are becoming increasingly popular. The revival of tin tile ceilings combined with the immense popularity of copper kitchen accessories has lead to a combination of these two great interior design fixtures - copper tiles!
Copper tiles
Copper tiles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, designs and even material. Some manufactures make a faux copper finish (that is, copper plated, spray painted, powder coated etc). For these materials, you need to follow the manufactures directions for installing & maintaining them.
We make & supply solid copper tiles. With solid copper you can be confident that over time, the finish will not rub off, chip, flake or simply wear away from cleaning. These tiles are for wall use, and we do not recommend them for use as floor tiles.
Installation of your copper tiles
Our larger 10" and 12" tiles come with 2 hanging hooks. This is great for a centerpiece or if you are just hanging one tile as they can just be hung on nails or screws on your wall.
Our tiles have a 1/4" rolled edge on the inside. This means that you can also use them as an accent in a ceramic or glass tile backsplash. Check the thickness of those tiles for correct alignment.
For best results, we do recommend hiring a professional tile contractor.
For a full tile effect, attach the tiles to a wall or backer board with a high quality epoxy adhesive. Use masking or decorators tape around the edge of the tile while you grout, to avoid scratching the tile.
Maintenance of your copper tiles
If the tiles you have purchased are not lacquered, you may want to see our guide on cleaning copper . For lacquered tiles, maintenance is very simple. The high grade clear coat lacquer that we use will last for many years with some simple steps of care. This lacquer will protect the pattern and patina from tarnishing with the air or from splashing with water.
- Clean by wiping damp soft cloth
- You may use a mild detergent if you wish, but be careful not to scrub to hard & do not use scourers
- Do not use harsh abrasives, strong chemicals or other products such as acetone which will strip the lacquer
