Cooking with your kids can be a great experience for everyone. It is a great conversation starter, it promotes confidence in your childs abilities and best of all it makes great memories!! I hope you find these tips useful when Cooking with Your Kids!!
Basic Needs:
- Utensils: Small mixing bowls, whisk, wooden spoon, baking pans, measuring spoons and cups. Child size utensils are great if you have them.
- Simple Recipes: Ask your kids what they would like to make. There are many great web sites where you can find child friendly recipes. No-bake recipes are great for younger children.
- Apron: Every budding chef needs to keep clean while looking stylish. Kids Cooking Apron
- Blank Notebook: Why not make your very own cookbook with all your kids favorite recipes! Write down the recipe and let the kids use stickers to rate how much they liked it. Be sure to add photos of the kids cooking as well as the finished product!
Getting Started:
- Safety first: Be sure to go over the safety rules before starting your recipe. Remind the kids about fire safety, handeling of sharp utensils and only using electricity with the help of an adult.
- Cook on a work surface that all the kids can reach safely.
- Wash Hands!
- Measure the ingredients into small bowls first to ensure you have everything you need. This will make the whole cooking experience go more smoothly too!
- Make this a life learning experience. Talk about basic skills such as shapes, colors, sizes and amounts. Talk about how foods grow and where the ingredients come from. Also emphasize sharing, taking turns and the importance of helping with the daily routine.
- Everyone helps clean up. The rule in my house is "You make the mess...you clean the mess!" This can be fun too. Have the kids lick the spoons before giving the dishes a "bubble bath" in the sink. Assign each child a specific clean up job. It will get done in no time.
Have Fun!!!!
Cooking with your kids is a great way to spend time with them and make memories that will last a lifetime!
