Confidence in Buying David Yurman on-line!
With all the scare and pandemonium on China this and China that...It has watered down the truth that you can still confidently buy David Yurman on-line. We are proponents of the savvy shopper who does their research and asks all the appropriate questions and yes verifies authenticity on their pieces.
We also feel confident that those that intend to maliciously deceive the market by selling counterfeits eventually die off - why because they simply end up shooting themselves in the foot...so rule number 1 look at the longevity of the company you are buying from (people selling fakes could not stay in business period), rule number 2 look at the items they are consistently selling (i.e. designer goods, or hodgepodge) rule number 3 look at their feedback there is a reason why EBay has a feedback for those that have private as their feedback - they obviously have something to hide. Rule number 4, do your research, research, and more research...and lastly Rule number 5 use WISDOM.
Although we have never been privy to buying or seeing these "fake pieces" from this vendor in China so we can not support the previous reviews. However we would like to clarify some confusing points and assumptions that have been made such as:
A. "If they are new then they are probably not authentic" - false.
Just because an item in described as new can mean a couple things yes the item is new and never been worn or two it's in new condition - only stored or just hand handled. This does not mean the item is counterfeit.
So please make sure you look at the seller's history to verify their back ground and hence ask the question...often a person received an item as a gift and they do not want it so it is new and are only selling that one item...use wisdom.
B. "If they do not release information as to where they got it from it probably fake"- False. As a company and (by no means are we claiming we are an authorized dealer for any of the products we sell) we are not privy to releasing names of consigners, private individuals, companies, brokers, etc due to liability and confidential reasons...again that does not been the item is not authentic. Again use wisdom if they are new to ebay and only selling one or two things and if they are being aloof then stay away.
C. "Check it out on the David Yurman Website" - Another misnomer is that if the David Yurman site does not have it then it's not authentic..Again false. Not all of Yurman pieces are on his website and the older collections get replaced with the newer collections...just because the picture of the bracelet on the David Yurman web store is showing yellow gold and the one selling on eBay is silver does not mean they do not produce it in silver. Or because the web store says is 14k and the one listed on eBay says 18k...we have found on several occasions and more than a few to mention here where the Yurman website or Neiman Marcus website is wrong on the item description, selling price, and even carat description. So here is our thoughts go to the source call the Yurman Customer Service line in New York and ask them. It's that simple...go to yellow pages website
and plug in David Yurman in New York and it will pull up David Yurman Customer Service number and if you ask them the question they will tell you what they do or do or do not carry, prices, etc. If they do not have the answer they will direct you in the right direction.D. "All David Yurman split shank rings with stones or with or without diamonds are fake" - simply false and have no basis outside of pandemonium.
So here is a guideline and recap that we feel you can use to guide you in the right direction to feel confident about buying authentic pieces on line.
1. Longevity
A. How long have they been selling on line/ebay? Does not mean if
they are new that they are not legitimate but ask for their contact number (make sure it's not a cell and an address you can verify with yellow pages.com) - this way you can track them down if need be.
B. Anyone asking for payment only with money order, western union, or bank wire transfer - question, question, and question. Seller's requesting for you to send them the money to a PO box also asks for a physical address that you can verify.
C. Check if they are ID verified, Square Trade Member, or/are they bonded on their items?
2. Consistency
A. What are they selling? Is there consistency in their selling? Month in month out?? If not maybe they are a new comer nothing wrong with that as long as you verify their identity..and ask them if and why questions. Buying items of value you need to trust that the seller is reliable. If they have not sold often and only 2-3 things a month or even 2-3 items a year go back to 1A and call them and ask, ask, ask. We have found that people who are new and want to sell a few items never have questioned us in contacting them. If they choose not to give you their information for whatever reason then it's probably not worth it for you to pursue purchasing from them. No matter What - This is your purchase! You want to feel confident what you are purchasing. If it's too good to be true it most likely is...generally you can peg those sellers down because of their lack of feedback/history...so stay away!
3. Feed back
A. We look at feedback as a footprint of whom we are - you can even tell the personality of the sellers/buyers by their responsiveness even keel...aggression, etc. But most importantly it is an indicator of your trustworthiness and it goes both ways for buyers and sellers. Again if there is not much on there then go back to rule 1A. Spend time reviewing feedback. If you are a new comer to eBay and questioned certain items then you can always randomly go back to the feedback left to that seller by their buyers and click on the contact tab of the buyer and ask the buyer about their experience/purchase with that particular seller.
Buyers are not going to candy coat an experience they will either tell you yes you can trust them or stay away! Even long after the feedback is left.
4. Research
A. For all first buyers with us we always suggest you take your piece in to an authorized Yurman store. So we suggest that with any piece you purchase on-line. However, we had one experience where an authorized Yurman store indicated that a certain piece was not authentic and the buyer then took it in to a Yurman Flagstore and they said it was authentic ...remember the people selling at Neman's, Saks, etc. are sometimes hourly paid and part time employees so they often do not have the experience that someone who works for the direct company ...however use wisdom, wisdom, wisdom. In this particular circumstance the customer felt the lady did not know what she was really talking about and that is why she took it into the Flagstore. Note: Obviously not all experiences are going to be the same. Call in advance before going to a boutique and ask if there is one person in that boutique that handles Yurman more than the another person then we suggest you seek out that person.
B. Check their return policy- Our suggestion is read their return policy it's their for a reason any legitimate and reliable seller will offer money back guarantees on authenticity issues or if you are a sincere buyer who simply ordered the wrong item or made a mistake then a good company or seller will work with you to assist you in making it fair for all parties. Otherwise keep in mind legitimate and reliable sellers who do offer guarantees will also scrutinize returns because there is tremendous cost associated with doing business on line and also to keep "unfair returns" at bay.
C. If there is any questions in regards to certain pieces, styles, prices, cut of stones, color of stones, hallmarks, COA's, etc. simply call David Yurman Customer Service they are the experts.
5. Wisdom - use it in every rule.
