Choosing a processor
The processor is the main microchip that controls your computer and does its "thinking." Because the processor affects almost everything your computer does, it's one of the most important factors in the overall performance and cost of your computer.
If you play the latest and most intense 3D games, use imaging applications or view graphic-intensive websites, then consider a high-end processor. While many processors available may satisfy your current computing needs, the PC market is fast-paced and ever changing. Do you plan on editing camcorder footage on your PC? Will you have enough ports and slots to connect all the peripherals you'd like to add? These are questions you should ask before selecting a processor.
Intel® processors
Intel introduced the first microprocessor in 1971, and it has developed top-quality, high-performance products for the computer industry around the world. Today, Intel supplies industries with chips, boards, systems and software that make up computers, servers and networking products.
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor
If you're into 3D gaming, DVD authoring, digital music and other multimedia, the Intel Pentium 4 delivers,
offering more power for demanding applications. The Pentium 4's advanced technology delivers new levels of performance for activities that need it most.
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT Technology
PCs featuring the Intel Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology add Hyper-Threading Technology for an
extraordinary computing experience. Hyper-Threading Technology lets you run multiple demanding applications at the same time. The result is more efficient and faster system responsiveness, so you can multitask like never before.
Intel® Celeron® processor
Compatible with virtually every leading hardware and software brand, the Intel Celeron processor maximizes reliability for your basic computing needs. It's designed for the PC user who doesn't need as much performance as a Pentium 4, but desires Intel's reputation and technology.
AMD processors
Processors from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) offer great value and performance, and are completely compatible with all off-the-shelf software programs.
AMD Athlon™ XP:
The AMD Athlon XP Processor was designed to provide peak performance through a unique design. The Athlon XP enhances Windows® XP performance, and includes 3DNOW! Technology, which provides more intense and lifelike 3D graphics and imaging.
AMD Athlon™ 64:
The Athlon 64 is designed to power the PCs and programs of tomorrow. While most current applications are 32-bit, the Athlon 64 is built to handle 64-bit programs, so your PC manages the most complex games and software faster than ever, as well as future 64-bit Windows programs. You'll see higher precision gaming, amazing graphics, and faster results when editing video or printing images. As an added bonus, built-in anti-virus security gives your system even more protection.
