I've read on here, people doing calculations saying how much they would actually save purchasing a Yaris, Fit, or other economy car vs. a Prius, and how the added expense of the Prius would take years of fuel savings to benefit your wallet.
While it's true, if you are only after fuel economy, you may be better off paying a smaller sticker price and pony up a few extra green-backs for fuel and you will be better suited to keep your home stocked with Pampers and Snapple, but what some people are not taking into account when they compare these cars is what you actually get. The Prius is no econobox. This is a mid-sized 3000+ lb. car that drives much nicer than these cars you are comparing to. My Prius also happens to have Bluetooth hands-free phone, keyless entry, Keyless operation, an amazing anti-theft system, 9-speaker JBL sound system, Navigation, HID headlights (SUPER BRIGHT!) side curtain and regular airbags, more road noise isolation/insulation than a Yaris or Fit, and a much better resale value on top of it all. The comfort and finish of the Prius may not be on par with their sister Lexus models, but it is far above the Yaris or Fit. It is a more fair comparison to use the Honda Civic EX vs. Civic Hybrid as they are pretty much the same car body/interior. Just make sure to compare apples with apples. Fuel economy is not the only thing a Prius offers.
