Recently, someone asked me: "What are the most common themese in the Blues?" In my opinion, there are many different Themes in the Blues. It's a hard question to answer definitively. In the end, to a certain extent, it comes down to opinion. I tried to think of a creative way to answer the question, so I chose to do so via some of my favorite Blues songs.
My favorite songs that represent (in my opinion) some of the most common themes found in Blues Songs are:
Bragging / Manhood
"Mannish Boy" - Muddy Waters
Jubiliation
"Let the Good Times Roll" - B.B. King & Bobby Blue Bland
"Playin' with my Friends" - B.B. King
Goin' Wherever the wind blows
"B. Movie / Boxcar Blues" - Delbert McClinton
Love / Marriage Problems
"Dr. Feelgood" - Aretha Franklin
"Down-Hearted Blues" - B.B. King
Tryin' to get on home
"Travellin South" - Albert Collins
Desparation
"Texas Flood" - Various Artists (although I like Stevie Ray Vaughan's version!)
"Born under a Bad Sign" - Albert King
That's just scratching the surface. But, if you are looking for classic Blues Music to buy, or maybe trying to write a new song, maybe this was a helpful jumpstart.
