This guide is intended to inform you about the average periods of time that common body piercings take to heal from the moment you're pierced until the body has completely healed its "wound". IF YOU FIND THIS GUIDE HELPFUL, PLEASE TAKE A SECOND TO VOTE YES! THANKS!

Consider This:

First of all, I'm not a professional body modification artist of any sort, but like you, I had some questions about healing times before I got any piercings, and I also based the placement of my piercings on the expected healing period. Remember, when a piercing is healing, it requires more special daily care than a healed, "seasoned" piercing does. If the time commitment is a factor in your life, consider the healing time of any given piercing before you pursue it! Healing a piercing requires time (obviously), patience, and a certain amount of money (spent not only on the piercing itself, but also on jewelry, cleaning supplies, and medication should it get infected).

How A Piercing Heals

Before you think about how long it will take to heal, you need to know what's going on with your body in the healing process. After all, the more you know about your piercing, the better your experience will be!

The way a piercing heals is different from a normal wound. Instead of having a cut or scratch, the body now also has something invading (the jewelry) and must completely reform itself to accomodate the jewelry inside. The first stage of healing is the inflammatory stage, where the body immediately sends lots of different kinds of cells to the wound to clot the blood and seal the body off from the jewelry. The extra blood flow causes the distinctive redness of a healing piercing as well as the normal swelling, and shouldn't be confused with infection. During the inflammatory phase, the wound will release a combination of fluid, dead tissue and white blood cells, in the form of crusting or drainage. This shouldn't be confused with pus or seen as a sign of infection, it's normal (unless it is seen to an extreme degree, in which case you may have an infection and should visit your doctor immediately).

The next stage is called the reconstructive stage, which takes the most time and contributes to the healing times listed below. The process starts within hours of the piercing. During reconstruction, the cells join together and cause the growth of new tissue. This tissue, however, is not as strong as normal skin. Typically, after 3 weeks it only has 70-80% of the strength of normal skin. The cells that form the new tissue make up a very thin layer that is easily damaged by movement or the use of incorrect aftercare products. This is the most important healing phase during which you must care for the wound carefully.

The last stage is the maturation phase. During this phase, the new-formed tissue develops, strengthens and eventually shrinks back to the normal size. The redness will gradually disappear and the scar tissue will diminish until the wound is fully healed.
