Common Courtesy

Making the World a Better Place one Gesture at a time

1. Please and thank you: Probably one of the easiest ways to spread a feeling of well-being. 3 simple words. Teach your children this one early.

2. Follow up Thank you Letters: Christmas is just around the corner; Thank you notes/letters really show that you care. If you don't have time to write a letter, a simple phone-call will do.

3. Holding Doors/Elevators: This one baffles me all the time. Maybe it's because I'm male and I'm young, but even when the opportunity comes up, I never have doors held for me. It only takes 5 seconds and it can really help a person out.

4. Helping People With Groceries/Goods: When you see a mother with 3 children trying to load her car with groceries, offer to help. It only takes a couple minutes but can help save another person from 10 minutes of frustration.

5. Car Trouble: If you have a cell phone, or know enough about cars to offer help, stopping for 10 minutes could save a person hours of frustration. I wouldn't recommend stopping while alone or while you're on a dark stretch of road, but if you can help, you should.

6. Letters of Praise: Businesses rarely see these, but if you've been going to the same Grocery store or Restaurant for years and always receive great service, you should let them know. It raises moral and increases the chance of that service staying great for years to come.

7. Tipping at places where it's applicable: This one is a no-brainer, 10% when you receive either great food or great service. The kitchen shouldn't suffer because the server did, and vice versa.

8. Food bank donations: A non-perishable food item won't break the bank in most households, and can really help families in need. And try not to donate creamed corn or canned beats. Make it something everybody will enjoy, not something you hate.

I hope you've enjoyed this guide and the ideas it puts forward. Please contact me with other ways you think Common courtesy can be improved and I'll be sure to add them.
