Combating Global Warming One Person at a Time

Global Warming is a huge issue, and whether you believe it or not, saving the environment is something we should all take 100% seriously.  I love the environment, not enough to hold peace rallies and pollution sit-ins.  But I do love it enough to know that if everybody made a few small changes we can definitely ensure the survival of our planet for us and for generations to come.

Below is a list of small changes you can make in your everyday life that can help negate global warming.

1. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl):  CFLs use 60% less energy than regular light bulbs.  Imagine the energy savings if your whole city switched, or your state, or country, or the entire world.
2. Turn off lights when you’re not using them:  Whether it’s your bathroom, kitchen, or porch light even with the use of CFLs, lights left on for no reason eat up energy like no tomorrow.
3. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner:  It’s not that hard to do and it will help keep your furnace/air conditioner running smoothly while using less energy.
4. Insulate and Weatherize Your Home:  You can save up to 25% on your heating bills by properly insulating and weather stripping your home.
5. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases:  Look for the Energy Star label.  Not only will it save you money on energy bills, but also it will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
6. Turn off appliance when not in use:  Shut off your DVD Player, CD player, and Computer when they’re not in use.  And unplug cell phone chargers, hair dryers, and any other item that doesn’t appliances that you don’t use regularly.
7. Recycle:  Every single newspaper, box, or magazine you recycle means one less tree taken from our environment.  More trees = a healthier environment.
8. Walk, Bike, or Run:  Whenever possible, use means other than Vehicles to move from place to place.  If you live out of town, park in a central location and walk to each location you need to visit.
9. Carpool:  The carpool lane rocks, it speeds up travel time and people who carpool reduce vehicle emissions by up to 50%.
10. Plant a Tree:  Ok… Plant more than one tree, plant a few.  One tree will absorb up to 1 ton of Carbon Dioxide in it’s lifetime.  Not only that but shade provided by trees can help reduce your air conditioning bill.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little guide.  All of the ideas above are simple and easy to implement into your daily life.  If we all do our part we can help reverse the effects of global warming.  We owe it to ourselves and each other to help make a difference.
