How to Clean Your Hummel Collectible Figurines
At CollectorsLine, we carry only the finest collectible figurines. We are delighted to present the beautiful M.I. Hummel line created by the Goebel Company.
The value of Hummel figurines always continues to grow so it’s important that you take good care of your investment and preserve your keepsake. As with any collectible, over time, it will become dirty. Please follow these tips before you clean your precious Hummel figurine:
M.I. Hummel figurines are made of a type of ceramic called earthenware. Each Hummel is created with an air hole to prevent it from breaking during the firing process. These holes are barely noticeable and easily overlooked. The insides of the figurines are not glazed. Any part of the figurine not protected by a glaze is able to absorb moisture. If you were to clean a figurine in water without covering the air hole, water will get inside the Hummel. Over time, the moisture inside a Hummel will gradually discolor the figurine and cause crazing (more about crazing below); and eventually the colors will fade on the outside. Many collectors are careful to store their Hummels out of direct sunlight, but are not aware that submersing them in water also causes the colors to fade.
When cleaning, please follow these important suggestions:
• Hummel figurines become very slippery when wet. Be sure to clean over a soft surface, in case your precious collectible slips out of your hands.
• Place your figurine on a flat surface, covered with a large bath towel or soft cloth.
• Dip a soft cloth, or a shaving or make up brush into a solution of warm water and baby shampoo.
• Wash the figurine to remove any dirt and dust.
• Use a soft baby toothbrush or Q-tips cotton swab to reach little crevices.
• Rinse the figurine carefully with a soft cloth dipped in warm water to remove the soap. Be sure to cover the air hole so that water will not get inside the figurine.
• If the figurine is very dirty, you may need to repeat this process several times.
• Allow the figurine to air dry.
What is Crazing?
Sometimes Hummel figurines look like they have spider webs covering their surface. Crazing is hairline cracks in the glaze on the surface of the Hummel. It doesn’t hurt the figurine but it is distracting. Crazing is caused by changes in temperature and humidity or allowing water to seep inside the figurine while cleaning. Keep your Hummel at consistent temperature and humidity levels to prevent crazing and be sure to cover the air hole so that water will not get inside the figurine.
What are those silvery shiny spots on your Hummel?
Those silvery shiny spots on your Hummel are caused by the re-oxidation of the metallic oxide paint that Goebel artists use. Excessive oxidation can be caused by storing your precious collectible in a damp place or wrapping in silk paper. To prevent oxidation, make sure your Hummel is displayed or stored in a cold, dry place and avoid extreme temperature changes. When storing, wrap your Hummel in bubble wrap. If your Hummel has already suffered from oxidation, don’t despair! Take your Hummel to a professional restorer and they will re-fire your figurine to its original appearance.
