I am an artist. I will admit it. I have experience in professional theater, TV, costuming, journalism, and I have my visual artwork displayed in art galleries, corporations and people's homes. But I have not created these types of things in more than 5 years. Why? Because my favorite form of artistic endeavor is collecting and sharing MEMORIES. Yes, memories. What strikes you most when you see something from your childhood, or smell the musty smell of grandma's attic? What made you escape the world when you were young, and now when you are older? Going through the things which reminds you of yesteryear, your family, your first girl or boyfriend, grandma's meatballs cooking in the kitchen. Well, this is my favorite artform and has been for many years.
Why does my house explode with vintage shoes, purses, dresses, hats, gloves, anything? Because each bit of memories put together form the quilt of my life. Like hearing a tune on the radio from a person's youth or catching a glimpse of an old TV movie it brings back all the happy and sometimes sad memories of my life.
The collecting gave way to voyeurism. I started looking at other people's collections on e bay. Since 2003 I have spent countless hours just window shopping people's listings. Because it makes me happy. I have gone crazy for Star Trek items because that was a happy time in my life, and I have now collected DVDs and VHS to show my children. So, the Trek habit is now a family hand-me down. Just like when I was small, we'd gather round the table in the living room to watch James T. Kirk and Spock on first run TV, now my family and I gather around the DVD player doing the same thing many many years later.
Then, I decided to let go of a lot of my collection by selling. I am not a great picture taker. I admit it. But I do know each and every item I have in my collection, over 500 dresses, and over 1000 items I have collected through the years. I know them like a mom knows her children. And I have decided to share the memories by putting things up for sale. Yes, it fuels my habit to buy more, and it will some day pay some bills. But that is not the point. When I list, although not good at the technical aspects mostly as good as many pros out there, I list things that will bring memories back to the window shopper, just like I used to enjoy. And sometimes I list a designer dress that I got a good deal on (or didn't) because maybe it will fulfill a dream I had of being a princess or movie star some day (don't you know I had a degree in professional theater but became a mom and medical field technician instead of a movie star?). So my form of art is and always will be my true obsession, the collecting of memories, the sharing of dreams, and most of all the creativity of it all. I hope you enjoy whatever creative or art form you choose to enjoy because I have found my favorite, and it is right here on e bay! Thanks for reading my guide and I hope that you stop by my listings soon to see what memories I can share with you. Sincerely, the wiseoldowl
