Collecting Vintage SNOWMAN SNOWMEN Handkerchiefs

Vintage ladies handkerchiefs are a great collectible. You can still purchase many reasonable examples on EBAY everyday of the week. They are fun & don't take up a lot of storage or display space. If you are wondering how you can display them, see my What Can You Do With Vintage Handkerchiefs Guide!  There are so many pretty styles out there, I had to narrow idea for a collection down. I LOVE Valentine's Day & I LOVE Christmas, so I collect Valentine hankies & SNOWMAN Hankies! I already wrote a guide on Valentine Hankies so be sure you check that one out too!

Generally you will find 2 different kinds of hankies, print or screened hankies or embroidered hankys. The picture above shows some of my embroidered snowmen. I really enjoy the embroidered ones! Look at the sweet details!

When searching for Snowmen Hankies I try a number of different searches. Here's what I try:

Snowman Hankie

Snowmen Hankie

Snowman Hanky

Snowmen Hanky

Snowman Handkerchief

Snowmen Handkerchief

Christmas Hankie

Christmas Hanky

Christmas Handkerchief

Also try (snowman,snowmen) (hankie,hanky,handkerchief) or

(Christmas,xmas,x-mas) (hanky,hankie,handkerchief)

Now people often mis-spell on Ebay as well so you might try Hankerchief here in replacement for the Handkerchief searches. You might even try handkie. I have seen them listed that way! One more way may be snowpeople hankie. Now you will find more listed in the winter & towards Christmas, but in my experience the prices always seem to go higher then also. Be sure you search other times of the year. Here are some of my printed Hankies, some are more common than others. The mid 1950's was probably the height of production for children's handkerchiefs. Most little girls received one in their Christmas stocking. With the growing popularity of tissues in the 1960's these suddenly became part of yesteryear. These Children's designs would be harder to find:

The Victorian Era Child's Hankie from the 1800's on the lower right would most likely be one the most sought after of Snowman related hankies. I do not have a Mabel Lucie Atwell child's snowman hankie. I would love to get one someday! Her illustrations are so cute.

Most sellers will list the hankies in the handkerchief category under vintage clothing, but you might occassionally find a child's hankie listed under children's clothing. You may find older hankies under

  1. Antiques > textiles,linens >embroidery
  2. Antiques>textile, linens > other
  3. Collectibles > Linen, fabric & textile > other textiles
  4. Collectibles > Holiday Seasonal > Christmas Vintage pre 1946
  5. Collectible > Holiday Seasonal > Christmas Modern 1946-1990

I thought these 2 were interesting, same design of Victorian Snow Couple in Model T car, but the one on the left is just red outline. I wish I could show you more pictures, but the guide limit is 10 photos.

OTHER HELPFUL RESOURCES

There are several books in publication on collecting vintage handkerchiefs. Look for Collecting Handkerchiefs by Roseanna Mihalick or Childrens Handkerchiefs A Two Hundred Year History by JJ Murphy. Try Printed and Lace Handkerchiefs by Betty Wilson.

The EBAY Discussion Board Needle Arts and Vintage Textiles may be the place if you have any question.
