By far the most popular of the toys released by Mego are the WGSH line of 8" figures which included both Marvel and DC Comics figures. The first style of packaging were solid boxes, then came window boxes and finally at the request of the Kresge stores, which became K-mart years later, Kresge Carded figures and finally regular Carded figures. The first figures to be released were Superman, Batman, Robin and Aquaman. They were quickly followed up by Tarzan, Spider-Man and Captain America which were never released in solid style boxes. By the time the word got out on how popular these toys were becoming, Mego inked a deal to create more Superheroes and Villans from both Comic Companies. Not only did Mego create Villans for the line, they also put female characters into their assortments. Before the argument had been that most children prefered to play with male heroes than female heroines or villans of any gender. These figures came in window and Kresge Style cards. The first villan assortment contained the Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman, which were all very hot characters from the highly rated Batman T.V. Series that most kids saw in re-runs at the time. Also Mr.Mxyzptlk, one of Superman's Archvillans. It is not understood why Mego never created an 8" Lex Luthor for Supes to battle, though they made up for it when they released the Superman Movie 12" series which contained Supes, Luthor, General Zod and Jor-El. Wonder Woman, Super Girl and Batgirl were the other females included as well as male figures for Shazam and Green Arrow. It's of note that the first assortments of Batman and Robin had removable masks and are the hardest to find of the Batman/Robin 8" figures. The body types on most of the first figures are called T1, which means Type 1 with metal rivits in the wrists and a skinnier type body, the later type 2 bodys have no metal wrist joints and are more muscular. Seeing the success of their Marvel line grow, they introduced new heroes and villans for that line as well. The Hulk, Falcon and Ironman were put in their own assortment with Tarzan. And for Villans came The Green Goblin and the Lizard both Spidey foes. Much speculation has remained on why there were no other Marvel villans released as well, especially Dr. Doom as the Fantastic Four assortment including Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and The Thing made it's way to stores along with Conan and Thor which rounded out Marvel's line. None of the Marvel assortments other than Captain America and Spider-man appeared on Kresge styled cards, just window boxes and regular Cards. After Mego went out of business in the early 80's their figures were still on the shelves for a few years afterwords. Then most kids who grew up playing with the WGSH line grew up, went to college, got jobs and married. They never forgot the nostalgia of playing with those figures and soon they became one of the most sought after toys on the collector's market. Before E-bay the only way you could obtain Mego figures was to check out flea markets and garage sales or maybe know someone who had some to sell. Since then it has been easier to obtain them with E-bay having around 1,500 to 3,000 Mego items to choose from daily. At first the solid style window box, along with the window box and Kresge style cards were the highest priced WGSH items along with various playsets. Now the regular styled carding seems more popular, and the Big 5 that are the hardest to obtain on regular styled carding are: The Lizard, Green Goblin, Aquaman, Ironman and Wonder Woman, none were made on Cards for very long and Wonder Woman is the most scarce of the five. The prices range in between $1,500 to $8,000 depending on the condition of the packaging. Loose figures range from high, Thor, Conan and Green Arrow if they are complete with all weapons generallly sell for around $150 to $300 each, depending on condition. And the most common Mego is the Hulk, they made massive quantities of him during his Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno TV series run, you can usually find one for around $15 or so. You can find good deals if you look hard enough, some sellers have incomplete Megos for cheaper, and some sellers don't know exactly what they have and may list the toy under a different category then Mego, those you can snag for very little.
