It can difficult for an outsider to know certain things when collecting British books. Here are some definitions.
Beano: Popular comic featuring Dennis the Menace, which has travelled across to America, if in a different form.
Biggles: Flying ace, written by W E Johns.
Billy Bunter: Known as the "Fat Owl of the Remove". (The Remove is another name for the Fourth Year). Went to Greyfriars School (sic). Written by Frank Richards.
Blue Peter: Long running children's magazine show. The cartoon which featured in it in the 1970s was Beep and Booster-an space series (which features in the annuals). The opposing show was called Magpie.
Broons: Stereotype of a Scottish family, comic strip. (Browns)
Eagles: Boys comic with many facts, as well as Dan Dare, a space ace. He fought against the Mekon.
Grange Hill: A long running school series in the 1970s to 2000s.
Jennings: Dated school stories by Anthony Buckeridge.
Just William: William Brown, a naughty schoolboy whose gang is called the Outlaws. The writer was the female Richmal Crompton. Famous for audiobooks read by "Titanic" actor Martin Jarvis.
Ladybird: Small children's books, hardbacks, some very collectible.
Oor Willie (Our Willie): Scottish schoolboy in a comic.
Postman Pat: A mailman who lives in Greendale-a village, with his cat Jess.
Puffin: Younger Penguins-had their own magazines-Puffin Post and even annuals.
Viz: Adult comic with fairly rude content.
