These are interesting trivets to collect! Not only are the majority of them antiques but most carry a Rd Number on the reverse that accurately dates the trivet. Let me share two from my collection, and let's discuss this particular type of souvenir trivet.
Some Background on the *Isle of Man*
Map of the Isle of Man in relation to the British Isles
The Isle of Man lies in the middle of the Irish Sea, between England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales. It covers an area of 227 square miles with a current population of approximately 75,000. It is a self governed entity, although the United Kingdom provides for its defense and diplomatic representation.
The main industry of the island is tourism. It's a scenic vacation destination, and home of the yearly Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) Motorcycle Races.
*Isle of Man* Trivets
Rd No. 168240 (1891)
Cast Iron, 5.5" diameter with three 1/2" feet
Also on reverse: GWD (George Wolliscroft of Douglas, Isle of Man)
The symbol of the Isle of Man is the Trisceles, or the Three Legs of Man. Their Motto, Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, translates as Which Ever Way I Am Thrown I Will Stand.
Isle of Man trivets prominently feature the Trisceles. As these were souvenirs, the message A Present From The Isle Of Man often appears. If there is a British Rd (Registered Design) Number on the reverse it will date the registration of the design. The two trivets featured in this Guide have an Rd number from the years 1891 and 1895.
