Want a new hobby or start a new collection that is inexpensive. Try collecting vintage hankies.
I have sold over 25,000 vintage hankies on eBay since 2001. I started collecting hankies 20+ years ago to cut up and make doll clothes when I was in the craft business. The problem was I would buy them and never cut them up as they were way too beautiful. Then I was hooked on the beauty of each and everyone I seen at garage sales and could not pass them up so I bought and bought, not realizing there was anyone else who loved them as much as me!
Then one day I discovered eBay and started buying them from various sellers until one day I had to find a way to supplement our income as my husband was very ill and his medicines were costing us more than his income. One of the sellers that I became friends with said why don't you sell some of those hankies you have stored away for the past 20 years. They might help you pay for some of the medicines. So my collecting became my inventory for selling on eBay and look at me now!
I still buy hankies no matter where I find them. I love them. I love the colors. I love vintage linens. And they are still affordable collectibles. They don't make things like this today and it brings me joy to look at them. My hanky buyers say how can you get rid of them. Well, I did start selling out of necessity back then and now my husband has passed on and I find it a necessity for me to survive in this world as it is my only source of income. I enjoy them while I have them and then sell them so you can enjoy them!
Collecting women's vintage hankies is fun and inexpensive. Once hooked you will find many ways to show your collection off to everyone you know. You will be surprised how people will be interested in what you are collecting because everyone's grandmother, mother or aunt carried a hanky in their pocket or purse. They are a great conversation topic for women's groups, give a talk at a local church or civic group. You will bring the whole room to attention once you start showing off your collection!
Handkerchiefs are still very popular with the bride to be, as she looks for a hanky just like her grandmothers or mothers. I have had women purchase white or embroidered hankies for all the women who attend their wedding. What a wonderful gift as every woman remembers their family members who always had a hanky in their handbag.
People collect hankies by color or colored background, by flower, abstract, souvenir, holiday theme, scalloped, handrolled, children theme to designer hankies. Some of the rarest hankies are as follows: designer, children, round and all fruit. Some of rarest floral are the Lily of the Valley, Magnolia, Calla Lily and others. Many floral hankies were made in various era's because some flowers were more popular during the 40's than 50's or 60's.
If you want to get a conversation going display them around your house under glass tableclothes, as framed pictures, or make a wall hanging or quilt, as well as using them to decorate your clothes. They make some of the cutest children jackets, as well as fabulous womens skirts and decorate a collar or sleeve edge on existing clothes. Create your and your chilkdren's own designer clothes! You will find most people to be fascinated with your new hobby collection. No matter what reason you collect it is a FUN hobby!
