Increasily, Coldplay is emerging as a highly collectable band. Though only three full length albums and a few EP's deep, fans of the band, old and new, can attest to the sparce showing of some items, and the high dollar value placed on others. Number one priority find is obvously the self-produced and self-distributed Safety EP. This three track slimlined disc was supposedly primarly handed out to family, friends and some media; it's approximated that maybe 50 copies were sold publically. Any test press or acetate copy of this EP would be gold...and probably cost into the thousands. A mint/near mint copy of the Safety EP will run near or over $3000 USD. Other mass rarities include the Ode to Deoderant demo cassette, and any other acetate or demo pressings (these include CD-R's, CD acetates, and vinyl acetates). CD-wise, great pick-up's also include the Mince Spies fan club EP (1000 made), given away to fan cluib members before the inception of the main website. Another 'must' is the Virgin promotional give-a-way, known as the KCRW "Morning Becomes Electric" EP. These were given away with purchases of Parachutes. Either of these discs will run at or over $200 USD, pending condition. Any longbox promo will most likely rocket to bids higher than $300. Great CD's to keep your eyes peeled for include the "Rockin' On" Sampler, Clocks 3-CD Dutch set, 2-CD Aussie "Live 2003" promo and any of the great EMI promotional compilations. Vinyl-wise, most valuable are obviously any acetates or test pressings, which fortunately do float around on occasion. A "Speed of Sound" 10" acetate promo briefly made a showing, each numbered out of 10. These averaged $300-$500...if found. Other acetates have been located lurking about on occasion, and usually fetch a decent price (Parachutes/AROBTTH/X&Y/In My Place - $400-$1000 USD). OTW, one of the most valuble Coldplay vinyls out there would be the Don't Panic 12". No one knows for sure how many of these were even pressed. The record version was deleted prior to the completion of it's print run. [br] A gener rule of thumb to remember, any Coldplay Australian and Japanese pressings are tops. They gain in value quite quickly; especially any promotional items. Also not to be ignored are any French, Dutch or South American releases...again, especially the promotional releases. Artwork: The US Parachutes lithograph is a sweet find, and a great addition to any gig poster collection. One may fetch as igh as $100 USD, but I've seen some sweet deals on these from uninformed sellers. Another great pick-up is the 2003 gig poster numbered out of 50, designed by Jermain Rodgers. Expect to pay anywhere between $100-$250, pending condition. Other great items include any promotionally issued lithographs, banners, corkboard, or light box displays. The band sold limited edition lithographs of album and single artowkr through their site; some are still available. These are already gaining in value. If a beginner w/this band, condcuct a search for the Record Collector magazine distributed in February 2006. This is an exceptional resource. A note on autographs: Please use the services/information offered by eBay prior to purchasing any Coldplay 'autographed' item. Many of the ones posted are obvious fakes.
