COIN VALUE GUIDES

Coin value guides come from two major sources, books and coin newspapers. Whatever the source that collectors use to value thier coins, the only the selling of the coin will realize the true value of the coin.

Newspaper Guides

Since coin newspapers are published more frequently than the annual coin book guides, the coin prices listed are more up to date. The coin values; however, may not be a true listing of a coins value since the source of the listed values are slanted toward coin dealers buy prices. Basically, the coin newspaper is for dealers to list their coins for sale to the general public. Since the newspapers rely upon the dealers to pay for listings, the newspapers take no responsibility for the integrity of the dealers. When purchasing coins from a dealer listing in a coin newspaper, the collector should look for the ANA membership.

SMCCoins tested the integrity of some of the coin dealers listing in coin newspapers and found that the majority of the dealers provide the coins with the correct grades. There were a couple of dealers that were not proving what they advertised. One dealer offered BU Lincoln cents are wholesale prices. When we received the coins we revealed that they were whizzed to make them appear to BU. The Lincoln cents we received were in lower grades. Another dealer offered specials on BU coins. The coins we received were BU; however they had serious surface issues with large cuts, rendering the coins in the lowest grades.

When we contacted the newspapers to complain about the dealer whizzing coins, the newspaper replied that they did not take any responsibility for the listers.

Coin Books

Coin books are generally published once per year and they come in various sizes and formats. There are many types of coin books written by a host of authors. The most popular coin books are issued by Yeoman and they are depicted as buying and selling guides.

The blue book published by Yeoman is a very popular coin book. This book lists the coin values that dealers generally use to purchase coins from the general public. The values in this book are not accurate for this day and age since selling your coins on ebay or at other auction sites would render a significant amount more than any dealer could offer.

The red book also published by Yeoman is also very popular and the values in this coin book are significantly higher than most people would pay on eBay or other auction sites. Most dealers use this book as a guide for selling coins to the general public. Buying a coin at the listed prices in this book is similar to purchasing a new car. When you drive the car off the lot, you have a resale value lower than your purchase price.

Since we have 30 years of experience buying and selling coins we found a US Coin Guide by S Whitman that has coin values that coin collectors can use to actually value their collections. This coin book is now on ebay.

The white book we offer is published on demand in soft cover format. In this book you will find coin values that you should be able to obtain at auction, thus the true value of your coins. In addition, we are the only coin guide that guarantees the values with a purchase option. This book is offered on eBay and all those who have purchase our guide have left positive feedback.
