Gold cards - Are they a rare collectible?  How did they start?  How many are there?  If you find this guide the least bit helpful or entertaining, please take the time to click "yes" button at the end of the article.  It really does count and I will not feel like I wasted your time or mine trying to help anyone from getting a bad deal.

In 1992, a press release to the Trading Card Dealers Association announced the latest collection that represented a Golden Opportunity for hobby enthusiasts.

Harley Davidson Series 1 collector’s cards would become available in card and hobby shops and other locations where sports cards were sold.  This limited edition collection featured Harley Davidson motorcycles randomly selected from 1903-1992 and was produced under an exclusive licensee agreement with The Harley Davidson Motor Company.

The Collect-a-Card Corporation from Greenville, South Carolina was one of the leading producers of collectible trading cards in the non-sports sector of the trading card industry during the 80’s and 90’s.  Their listing of products included Kingpins, Musclecars, Vette-Set, Andretti Racing, Classic Country, American Bandstand, Chevy-Set, Harley Davidson, Easyriders Tins, McDonaldland, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Stargate and the Coca-Cola Collection.  They were innovators of the special card inserts commonly known as chase cards.  The chase card moniker applied due to the fact of the excitement that was created by the chase for the rare card.

The GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY was created to enhance the collectability of the cards. Foil packs included 1000 randomly inserted coupon cards which are redeemable for serial numbered Precious Metal Cards.  These cards contained 1 gram of .999 fine GOLD and were manufactured by the Precious Metals division of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation.  Each was encapsulated in both plastic and an acrylic case and featured the Harley Davidson 85th Anniversary Electra Glide Classic model.

The cards were available in foil packs of 10 cards per pack; completed factory sealed 100 card sets and a limited number of uncut sheets.  The premium quality cards included dynamic color and black and white photography.  They were printed in four color plus metallic ink with UV coating.  Card backs included information such as engine and transmission data, production numbers pricing and special features. The factory sets, which contained 100 cards in the collection, also featured a spectacular hologram card of the same model and came packaged in a shrink-wrap sealed tuck-type resealable box.

The company continued to utilize the GOLD Card platform with the two following series of Harley Davidson Cards and also had a fourth which was a dealer incentitive issue.  These four different Gold cards are extremely rare and combine artistic quality, name brand recognition and precious metal Gold content.  In the trading card business, if you were lucky enough to find one it was the equivalent of winning the lottery.  These cards will become the centerpiece of any collection.

Collect-a-Card experienced great success with the Gold Card promotion and found such enthusiastic consumer response that they utilized similar concepts with the highly popular Coca-Cola collections.
