Hi Gang! So... You've pulled granpa's Cox car or plane down from the attic and you want to run it.
Or you want to display it and clean it up and put it in top condition.
Well, whatever the reason, the engine is all gumed up and you don't quite no about how to clean it up.
First, remove the engine from the plane, boat, car, dune buggy or what have you. Usually, there are four small screws located by the fuel tank (rear of the engine), remove those and the engine can be safely removed from the model.
Now then, with the engine safely removed from the model, set the model aside for a moment and let's get to cleaning the motor. You will need a toothbrush you never plan to use on your teeth again, a small tupperware bowl and some denatured alcohol. This can be bought at your local paint store, home depot, lowe's,etc. Get a quart can. Couple of bucks.
Next, with a small screwdriver remove the four screws located on the back of the gas tank. This will be true for all the .010's,020's,049's and all the engines that have an integral gas tank, which is almost all of the standard Cox model engines. There are some Contest engines and T.D.'s that are different, but we are getting the general population here.
Once you've located and removed the four screws holding the gas tank and backplate, soak the entire engine and it parts in the alchol,in your tupperware bowl. Wash your hands and go eat a sandwhich or do something for about an hour.
Next, remove the reedvalve by popping out the snap ring. Soak in alcohol. Then brush the backplate and the fuel tank with your toothbrush and the alcohol.
Re-install the reedvalve and snapring, press together the backingplate and fuel tank to the engine and screw the four screws back on the rear of the engine. If the piston and cylinder are stuck, apply alcohol to the ports liberally while turning over engine. Remove glow head with Cox wrench and brush it clean too. You're Done!
Fire that baby up with fresh fuel and battery bought from your local hobby shop or order online at Tower Hobbies...
