This is a question I get asked a lot here at my coin store in Idaho. "The coins are a little dirty, should I shine them up before I bring them?". Or, "I was thinking of polishing them up first, does that make them more valuable?"
NO!! Don't do it!!
I see so many coins that have been cleaned, and all I can do is shake my head. One you clean a coin, it's over. No filling in those lines, no replacing that luster.
I know it is tempting, it has a big black spot on it, or you can't read the date very well.....
If you think a coin you have needs a cleaning, take it your local dealer....he/she can tell you whether it needs to be cleaned and whether he/she can do it.
Hope this bit of advice helps!
