At Porcelains Ltd we have a fine collection of Hummel Figurines.  These are made in Germany by the Goebel Company and are based on sketches by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel.

The value of M I Hummel figurines always continues to grow so it's important that you take care of your investment.  As with any collectible, over time it will become dirty.  Please follow these tips before you clean your precious Hummel figurine:

M.I.Hummel figurines are made of a type of ceramic called earthenware.  Each one is created with an air hole to prevent it from breaking during the firing process. These holes are barely noticeable and easily overlooked.  The figurine is not glazed on the inside so it can absorb moisture. When you clean with water make sure to cover the air hole on the figurine.  Over time the moisture inside a Hummel will gradually discolor the figurine and cause crazing.  Never submerge your figurine in water.

Cleaning, please follow these suggestions.

  • The figurine becomes slippery when wet, so be sure to hold it over a soft surface in case it slips from your hands.
  • Dip a soft cloth in warm water and small amount of baby shampoo.  Gently wash the figurine to remove dirt and dust.
  • Use a Q-tip cotton swab to reach crevices.
  • Rinse carefully with a soft cloth dipped in warm water to remove the soap.  Cover the air hole so water does not get inside the figurine.
  • Allow to air dry.

Display

Display your beautiful, collectible Hummel figurines in a safe, cool, dry place.  Many  people place their Hummels in a curio cabinet that protects the figurines.  Do not place your Hummel in direct sunlight or in a bathroom.  The sunlight will discolor the figurine and humidity can cause oxidation and crazing.
