Clay Poker Chips - A Guide to Clay Poker Chips

Poker has become the hottest thing since sliced bread - all over network television, ESPN, and magazines. From colleges to casinos, poker is one of the fastest growing games around and, at the base of any poker game, are the poker chips!

The most popular poker chips are clay poker chips because they have more heft and better feel than plastic chips. You will find that casinos use clay poker chips (rather than plastic or a different material) because they are more dent resistent, show logos more vividly and have nice feel for the poker or card players. If you are looking to start or buy a poker chip set you will want to first make sure the chips are clay poker chips. Then you will decide whether you want a 300 chip set (good for 3-5 players) or a full 1,000 chip set (capable of hosting larger games).

About Poker Chips

The most common poker chip colors used in United States casinos to differentiate between dollar values are:
  •     White or Blue poker chips, $1
  •     Pink poker chips, $2.50
  •     Red poker chips, $5
  •     Blue poker chips, $10
  •     Green poker chips, $25
  •     Black poker chips , $100
  •     Purplepoker chips, $500
$2.50 chips are almost exclusively used for blackjack tables, since a natural typically pays 3:2 and most wagers are in increments of $5. However, the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey has used pink chips in $7.50-$15 and $10-$20 poker games. In Las Vegas and California, most casinos use blue or gray for $1 chips.

Kinds of Poker Chips

Though there are standard poker chip colors and styles - and all of the major casinos use clay poker chips - each casion has uniquely branded and styled clay poker chips... often introducing specialized chips to commemorize certain events or festivities. This is common at casinos like the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas because they often host major concerts and shows. Collectors will buy and trade poker chips from various locales and casinos. Some of the most sought after are:
