A very common question that I get is --- What is the difference between CHROME and STAINLESS ? Why would I want a chrome nerf bar or grille guard instead of a stainless steel one? --
Chrome when used in truck accessories is usually done over a steel product (although plastics and brass can be chromed too), which is acid dipped, then copper, nickel and finally chrome plating is done on the part. After the chrome plating process the part is polished to a high shine. Chrome parts can rust over time where the coating is scratched and nicked. There are many chrome waxes available that will help prevent this.
With Stainless, the part is manufactured out of stainless steel and then polished to a shine. Stainless steel is naturally rust resistant, so the concerns about rust are greatly reduced. The shine that is possible with stainless steel is not as high of a luster as chrome.
The correct choice for you might depend on where in the country you live. If you live in a relatively dry place with mild winters (and no salt on the road) then you would probably prefer CHROME since it has a better shine. If you live in an area where salt is used on the roads in the winter, then you would proabably want to get a STAINLESS product and avoid the rust possibility. It is important to note that with a little cleaning and wax that chrome is perfectly fine in a winter salt area.
