Do you realize the importance of giving your child a solid spiritual foundation? Are you looking for ways to present timeless truths of the Bible to your little ones? I recently had an article published in Christian Parenting Today on this topic and I would like to share some of my tips with you.
- Make study of God's Word important in your preschool teaching routine. By doing so you will not only teach your child about God but you will also teach him the importance of making God a priority. It is not the youth pastor's job to lead your child to Christ- that responsibility was given to parents biblically.
- Address your child on his level or slightly above what you feel his level of understanding is. I have been amazed at how children posess more insights into great truths of the Bible than I would have expected.
- Make God a part of all your studies. If you are studying nature, reflect on the beauty of God's creation. If studying the ABC's, consider using one of many Bible ABC books or Bible ABC flashcards that are available. A search for Preschool Bible or Bible ABC is a good place to start. For beginning to write, have your child copy Bible verses.
- Encourage early memorization of simple Bible verses. There are tapes, CD's, posters and memory cards available to help with this. Children gain a sense of mastery and accomplishment through memorization and this builds their listening and synthesis skills for future academics.
- Engage the whole body and incorporate motor skills. Encourage your child to dance, jump and skip to lively Christian music. Some CD's are geared specifically to children.
- Read the Bible to your child. There are several Bibles written specifically for children. There are also books of Bible stories written and illustrated for children.
- Learn along with your child. I am convinced that one of the main reasons God sends us children is to teach us to grow in Christ. Take advantage of the gifts of boundless joy and energy seen in preschoolers and let it encourage your entire household to grow closer together and closer to God.
Finally, let the Lord guide you as the choose the best educational materials for your child.
