Saris are increasingly popular in US and other Western countries. However the buyer is mostly unaware of the types of saris that are available. This short guide would help in getting a general idea about choosing this elegant outfit.

First, the buyer must decide on the objective behind buying the sari. Depending on the requirement she may choose a particular material.

Today, in market we have silk, chiffon, crepe, cotton, synthetic and synthetic cotton materials available.

  • If you are willing to spend above 100$ on a single sari and you have a grand occasion coming up you can go for silk sari. But beware of cheating, as getting pure Kanchipuram or Banaras or Mysore silk is not easy in ebay. Anything below 100$ cannot be a pure silk sari.
  • If you wish to have the grandeur of silk but donot want to spend so much, you can go for synthetic zari border sari that are abundant in ebay. But never pay more than 30$ for such saris.
  • If you are looking for a formal occasion, you can go for good cotton sari with or without zari. Here again beware of synthetic cotton sari. This has a polyester mix. But one good thing about this sari is, it does not require frequent starch to keep it crisp where as pure cotton sari requires starch. Nevertheless the comfort and cool feeling you enjoy in a cotton sari would be missing in synthetic.
  • If you want that chic and sensual look you can go for synthetic and crepe sari. This comes in different ranges depending on the kind of work done on it. Printed  crepe may cost 20-30$ where as printed synthetic may range from 10-20$. If the sari has only embroidery work it would cost you an average of 20-30$ where as intricate embroidery with bead and sequin work may range from 15- 300$. The price depends on the grandeur of the work.
  • Chiffon saris are for daily wear. This comes in varied colors and design prints. One of the most interesting variety in Chiffon is the Light weight chiffon which as the name suggest is so light that its absolutely perfect for a whole day in sari. Its price ranges from 15-20$. Check out these saris from my store 'Diya's Saris'.

Hope this information would help in choosing the right sari for appropriate occasions. Will come up with more information on kinds of blouses and other accessories.  For queries and information, pl contact me at diyasp@gmail.com.
