When choosing the size for the winding check, it is important to always choose a size that will fit snuggly. Unlike metal winding checks that need to be exact, vinyl winding checks can stretch........significantly.
In order to ensure a tight fit, you will need to measure the diameter of the rod blank about six (6) inches above the foregrip, and select a winding check with that diameter.
In the picture above, you can see how the winding check is the diameter of blank 6 inches above the foregrip, but it easily slide down to the foregrip, giving it a proper tight fit.
If the winding check is not fitted correctly, the epoxy may seep under and possibly escape through the back, or the winding check may become loose due to heat of the sun, or old age.
I highly recommend that you have a variety of sizes in stock to avoid delays and so that you always have a well fitted rod. It is a small investment to make, but well worth the aggravations later.
Please email me if you need suggestions for your next rod build. I will gladly help.
