Choosing a Guitar Teacher or Music Instructor 101

Finding the right person to teach you how to play guitar, or any other instrument for that matter, is important. My name is Brian (I'm also known as Solarcell7 here on eBay) and aside from being an eBay PowerSeller, I am a guitar teacher. The style I teach is Electric Blues. I have been teaching guitar and playing professionally in Electric Blues, Blues Rock and Classic Rock Bands for 27+ years. In my years of teaching experience, I have found some very simple guidlines that should help you in making a good decision when it comes to picking the right guitar teacher. So......Here goes:

You definitely want to learn from your teacher. Friends are usually not the best choice. Even though you may personally know someone who already plays the instrument you wish to learn, it can cause friction between you both when that friend all of the sudden becomes an authority figure over you. You're more likely not be willing to take suggestions from a friend because you may feel as though they are busting you down as opposed to trying to help you. There is a comfort zone when dealing with someone you know personally. It's too easy to feel insulted when they critisize your performance.  So, neutral ground is important. I suggest going to someone you don't know as a personal friend to teach you.

Make sure the teacher you choose is someone who is knoweldgeable about the type of music YOU LIKE. There has got to be common ground in respect to your interests as a player. For instance.... If you're into Classical Chamber Music you may not want to go to someone who teaches Electric Blues (like I do). Don't ask me about a Vivaldi (Classical Composer)concerto, ask me about Buddy Guy (Blues Guitarist) and I have a lot more to say.

By the way....I like to listen to Vivaldi, it's just not my niche as a player. I'm a Blues player....O.K......

Make sure you feel comfortable around your teacher. You don't want any kind of tension when you are having your lesson. You want to be relaxed so you can take in the information they have to share with you. This really is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT things for you to be receptive to what they have to offer. Every now and then you may experience a personality clash. If you find yourself feeling un-easy or intimidated in any way around your instructor, FIND SOMEONE ELSE! Trust me, you'll get a lot more out of your lesson.

Well, there you have it! My personal insight as to how to choose the right Guitar Teacher for you. I hope you found this Guide helpful and informative.
