Kettlebells are an excellent way to get a complete body workout with just one or two weights. They start at 9lb and go as high as 203lb! Because of their design, kettlebells feel much heavier than a dumbbell of the same weight. Most men are strong enough to start with a 35lb kettlebell. If you are in relatively good shape it won’t take long before you are ready to progress to the heavier 44lb or 53lb kettlebells. The 53lb kettlebell is the standard weight for the Russian military. The 70lb and above kettlebells are primarily used by athletes and more advanced kettlebell practitioners.
Women should start with a 9lb -18lb kettlebell. Very strong and athletic women can start with a 26lb. Not many women move up to a 35lb kettlebell or beyond unless they are very advanced.
Probably the most important thing to remember is SAFETY FIRST! Don’t let your ego push you into using a kettlebell that is too heavy. It is MUCH better to start with a lighter weight and move up slowly & safely than to start too heavy and risk injury.
