Choosing The Right Bed For Your Cat
Deciding on what type of bed to buy for your cat is based on a few things. Observe where your cat currently sleeps. Does your cat spend the majority of his/her time sleeping on ground level or high level areas? Does he/she enjoy sleeping on your bed or alone? Cats love so many different things but they seem to favor a certain area. When picking out a bed, check the size and comfort level (especially for older cats). Make sure the bed is big enough to accomodate your cat. Some cats (like mine), like to turn around a few times before settling down. I think what he is trying to do is make a comfortable "nest". Sometimes when the bed is very soft, I catch my cats kneading the blankets. If your cat prefers to sleep on your bed, you can take an old shirt or a soft fleece blanket and place it on your bed. Cats will instinctively know that special area is his/her designated spot.
If your cat enjoys sleeping on higher levels, you may want to buy a soft perch. Perches are easy to install nowadays. You can choose to install your perch using industrial strength velcro or using old fashion screws. I recently installed an unheated perch that has orthopedic foam covered with a faux sherpa cover. My older female cat loves sleeping there at night. I think it helps her back!

Some cats prefer quiet areas. I designated a spot in my armoire for my younger female Persian cat, Sarah. She loves going into her favorite nook for a middday nap. I removed my clothes from the first shelf area and replaced it with a soft fleece blanket and little leopard pet pillow. I've seen Sarah in there more times than I can count. She puts her head on the pillow just like a human and enjoys the quiet dark spot as a getaway from the noise and light of daily activity. If you don't have a quiet area you can make into a cat bed, you can buy a cat cave bed and place it in a quiet area. The cat cave bed provides a secret getaway for a cat craving alone time.

Each cat is very different so it's best to observe your cat's sleeping behavior before making a bed purchase. Sometimes all that is needed is one of your old sweaters placed in a quiet corner of your home. To give your cat added security, don't wash your old sweater before making it into a bed. Your cat will feel more secure when he/she can smell your own scent.
