Choosing a designer can be a simple process if you know exactly what you want in a designer. Designing for eBay requires a technique different than designing for the regular web, and for your eBay needs choosing a designer that specializes in eBay is a good choice.

But, how do you know which eBay designer is right for you? eBay does have a Certified Designers program now and provides a directory of these designers. You can find the directory on eBay at http://pages.ebay.com/storefronts/designdirectory.html but I have to be honest when I say that not all of the designers you'll find on the list are necessarily qualified designers.

Here are some helpful tips to help you when researching a qualified designer that is the perfect fit for you and your eBay needs.

1. How experienced is the designer? How many stores and/or templates have they designed and how long have they been specializing in eBay design? Not to say that the longer they've been on eBay makes them a better designer, but the more experience they have on eBay and the more knowledge they have about what works well on eBay.

2. Are they familiar with the strict policies and guidelines on eBay? Quiz your potential designer about do's and don'ts on eBay, don't be afraid to ask really tough questions. Take a look through their live work and see if their designs are within policies, and ask them about designs that are not. eBay violations can result in the closing of your store and suspension of your eBay account, not the designer's.

3. Do they support their work after completion? Some designers may wash their hands of you once the design is complete and installed. If you feel you'll need additional help after the design is complete, stick with designers who offer support or some kind of additional assistance. There are many designers that either offer monthly support plans or consultation plans that can continue the working relationship between you and them.

4. What quality of work could you expect from the designer? Study the designer's portfolio, speak with clients and research the reputation of your designer. Every designer has their own system and style with every project. It's important to know what you can expect from your designer. Take time to study your designer to be sure that their style, service and reputation is what you would like for yourself. Also, be aware of designers that use pre-designed templates (available on sites such as templatemonster.com) and don't tell you they do so. Ask if the custom-design their work or if they use templates. You'd be surprised how many designers use a ready-made template but pass the work as their own. I'm not saying templates are bad, in fact, we've had clients request templates. I'm just saying that you, as the client, have the right to know if your design is one that is readily available to the public at large or one that is custom-created.

Taking the time to communicate, ask questions and research a potential designer saves time and money later on.
