Chitipati represents two mythological Buddhist ascetics who were deeply absorbed in meditation that they were unaware of their own death by a thief and changed into wrathful death spirits with vows of eternal vengeance. As a symbol Chitipati represents eternal dance of death and perfect awareness. Chitipati is usually depicted as a male/female pair of intertwined skeleton caught in ecstatic dance. The Chitipati dance is commemorated twice annually in Tibet with ritual dance. Chitipati arises from The Secret Essence Wheel Tantra and is associated with the Chakrasamvara Tantra (Anuttarayoga Tantra). Primarily Chitipati is employed as a wealth practice, with emphasis as protection from thieves. Chitipati is special protector for the Vajra Yogini practice.
