Research now also shows that most UV damage to the eye happens while people are young but the damage only appears later, when a person reaches adulthood. It is now believed that 80 per cent of damage occurs before the age of 20. The eyes of children can be compared to a window – which lets all light in and all of that light contains UV rays, which damage the eye. So when buying for children look for sunglasses that still protect. Make sure they are not toy sunglasses and that the UV protection is the same as for an adult pair. For the best protection, look for glasses with 100 percent UV protection and sunglasses should have some side protection and have some protection for the delicate skin around the eye. Polarised sunglasses reduce glare but look for sunglasses that provide at least 98 per cent protection from both UVA and UVB rays
