Cheongsam, Cheong-sam or Chinese Qi Pao (Qipao) are the most frequently used English terms* for this beautiful traditional Chinese dress that you have no doubt seen on many occasions.
The history of the Cheongsam dates back to the Manchurians of during the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), the last of the ruling Imperial Dynasties in China. They were originally loose fitting, hung straight down from the body, and had a high binding collar. The modern Qi Pao first began to appear in Shanghai in 1900 as an adaptation from the traditional clothing worn by the Manchurians. The modern Qi Pao are very stylish, form fitting, ankle-length or mid calf length gowns that feature mandarin collars, cap or short sleeves and button or frog (knotted cording through a loop) closures.

Contemporary designs have allowed the Qi Pao to radiate elegance and classic Chinese style. The dresses are intricately detailed with embroidered Chinese designs such as dragons and can be made from sensual fabrics such as shimmering silk, satin, or rayon.
Today’s western designer fashions are influenced by these traditional Chinese dresses. Photos of celebrities wearing the Asian inspired attire were featured in magazines and newspapers at the Shanghai Fashion week November, 2007. Some have written that the cheongsam has become an alternative to the little black dress for special occasions.

Their classic styling, versatility, and comfort make Cheongsam an ideal attire consideration for special occasions and event attire ranging from evening socials, parties, cocktail hour, dinner out, and even weddings, and wedding party dresses. They combine Asian elegance with western sensuality.
