this is a Goldscheider wall mask
Ceramic wall masks were inspired by the wooden tribal african face masks easgerly collected during the 1930's. Many lovers of kitsch and art deco find this unusual form of portraiture irresistable. It makes a striking feature on a staircase wall.
Unlike the tribal masks that inspired them, ceramic wall masks of the 1930s to 50s were given the bold colors and sharp contours of the period. Most masks were female, which allowed for a full exploration of flamboyant fashions in hair, makeup, and dress. The most important makers were the central europeans Goldscheider, Goebel, and royal dux, based in austria, bavaria, and bohemia, respectively.
