I recently sold a vehicle on Ebay. The buyer indicated he would be sending me out a cashier's check. I like many of you would assumed okay thats fine. The seller emailed me multiple days in a row to see if I had got the check yet. I indicated I would email him when i got it in the mail. So I check the mail the next day and sure enough heres my check. I look on Ebay , it indicates he's from N.C. and the buyer is no longer a registered user, I ask him why and he said I had to change my address I'll be back on soon. We all know you can edit your address on Ebay. So I started to wonder what's going on. I look at the envelope the check arrived in and its mailed from London ,by royal air mail, this sends up a caution flag! I emailed him and the check was for more than the amount of the vehicle. I ask him why and he said that was for the shipper. He indicated that I was to take the check and cash it, wire the balance via Western Union to the Shipper who's in the U.K. Once I cash it and wire the balance which is to be done the same day, The shipper would contact me for pickup. So I call the bank the check is drawn on and they won't verify it over the phone. So I drive to the branch about 40 miles from here. I take the check in and the manager greets me, I explain the situation and ask him if the checks real, and if it is can he cash it. He checks it and it has the watermark, and said it looks real. But we will find out in a minute when I run it in the Computer. In the meantime while I'm waiting I read some information on the bank bulletin board about a guy with the same situation that sold a boat on ebay and recieved a fake cashiers check. I told my wife that sounds a lot like my situation. Then a few minutes later the bank manager returns and tells me that the check is a counterfeit and he must retain it and turn it over to the bank investigators and local law enforcement. I turend in all the paperwok and the envelope it was mailed in. I emailed the buyer back and no response, no contact period. So if someone wants to buy your items and trys to overpay you, its probably a scam. Beware!! Thanks
