Most airlines define carry-on baggage as items that you can stow beneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin. Often the airlines will have a bin at the ticket and gate check-in counters in which you can verify the size of any item you may question.
The Federal Aviation Administration defines the maximum size of a carry-on bag as 45 linear inches. which would be the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag. Examples of carry-on luggage would be back packs, small duffel bags, lap top bags, briefcases, tote bags, etc.
Stow heavy items under the seat in front of you, not overhead. Several airlines define the maximum weight of carry-on luggage as 40lbs.
The quantity of carry-on bags permitted vary by airline. In general one or two bags are permitted in a addition to one personal item. Personal items of course are defined variously by each airline; but general examples would be as follows: coat, camera bag, laptop computer bad, umbrella, diaper bag, collapsible stroller, child car seat, purse or handbag, and medical assistance devices such as canes, etc.
Pets in pet carriers are often permitted. In the case of pet carriers, they often fall into the category of carry-on luggage in that should be stowed under a seat.
