When you invest in your St John Knits clothing you are purchasing one of the finest garments made that will enhance your wardrobe and your style. St John Knits classic styles and fabrics will last and you can enjoy them for years to come with proper care. We have had many questions asked concerning the care of St John Knits and will address those for you.
1.)Interview the dry cleaner
St John Knits are famous for their Santana Knit and that fabric content is 80% wool and 20% rayon. This knit travels well because it is wrinkle resistant and packs nicely. This knit should always be dry cleaned by a reliable cleaner. I take all of my St John Knits (including cotton shirts) to the cleaners to ensure a long life for them. Don't be afraid to ask the cleaner if they have experience cleaning St John Knits and ask what precautions they take with them. We approached many establishments before finding the right one and while they may be more expensive it is well worth the price to ensure the items are safely cleaned. We asked one owner if they knew of St John Knits and he hesitated, but said he could clean anything and "would give it a try". We ran as fast as we could to another cleaner! Also, ask about covering and protecting the buttons, zipper pulls, paillettes and crystals. Buttons with stones should be removed and sewn back on to ensure that the stones do not come out. The solutions they use can cause the stones to come loose and fall out. You will know you have found the right cleaner by their knowledge of the product and sincerity of wanting to care for your clothing. Also, your local St John Boutique usually knows of a reputable cleaner and can give a recommendation.
2.) St John Knits alterations
Because of the knit fabric content the St John Knits Santana Knit can be blocked up. This process is a steam process that can alter the size of your garment up to two sizes. Guys and Dolls New to You does not recommend blocking an item down in sizing. There are professional establishments that can do this process and is is very economical. A good dry cleaner can do this and again, don't forget to ask your local St John boutique for a recommendation. Some of the other St John Knits (novelty knit, etc.) can also be blocked and results will vary.
If you need an alteration there are also many people that specialize in St John Knits. If you need a hem done they should know how to shorten the item without cutting it and then should finish the hem as it was originally. Sleeves should be shortened from the shoulder, especially if the they have embellishment at the cuffs. Again, make sure you interview the business and get recommendations from friends or boutiques.
3.) Repairs
Because the garments are knits you have to be aware of the dreaded moth hole. Keeping your clothing in a cedar closet or using moth balls will certainly help, but you may experience a moth hole in your garment. The good new is that this can also be repaired. These business charge per hole and should check for additional damage so you may have a bit higher charge when you pick it up, but if done properly the repair will be virtually invisible and the life of your item extended.
Proper care of your St John Knits will bring you many years of enjoyment. Because of the timeless styles pre-owned St John Knits hold their value and can even be sold if you decide to part with them. An eBay Trading Assistant can help you if you wish to consign your clothing.
