Caring for Mexican Pewter is very easy but vital to keeping it looking and shining like new. Mexican Pewter looks like silver but it is less expensive and requires less care. Caring for your bowls, platters and other items is very easy and requires very little time. When I first started selling Mexican Pewter such as bowls, trays, platters, trivets, etc, I was just like any other new seller, I made a few mistakes starting out but a few helpful buyers and sellers guided me to the a better Ebayer. One of the mistakes I made was not giving the buyer enough information about the product they were purchasing therefore I got a few emails asking me how to care for the product. After those few inquiries about how to care for Mexican Pewter, I started including a little card with instructions on how to care for Mexican Pewter:
One of the most important things is never to put the item in the dishwasher. Wash with soap and a mild detergent. The item should always be hand washed and dried right away to avoid water spots.
Another very important tip is to not to use the items to store or serve very acidic foods, the acid in foods will stain the surface on the pewter if left there for prolonged amounts of time. I do use my pieces to serve salsa that has vinegar as one of the ingredients but I leave the salsa there for only 2 hours or so.
Lastly, if the surface becomes scratched or damaged over time, I found two products have been very helpful in restoring the shine and removing surface scratches. Those products are Cape Cod Polishing Cloths, sold at Bed Bath and Beyond and Brasso, sold at most chain stores. I will also start carrying Cape Cod Polishing Cloths soon. The process of polishing is a little messy so I strongly recommend wearing gloves.
I wash the pewter pieces like fruit bowls that I have on my counter about one a week, just with soap and water and they look wondeful after that. I have two kids who live in my kitchen so any items on my counter get splashed with soda, etc. Sometimes if I want a little more shine to my pewter pieces, I wipe them with little cooking oil.
