Important Tips to Care For Delicate Vintage
Clothing of the Late 1960's
and the 1970's
Have you just won that amazing Cotton Gauze Dress that you have been longing for???
Here are a few tips to take good care of your item once you have it and need to clean it.
- Always use COLD water, with a very mild soap. Nothing with any chemical fragrance. Some good products are available at Whole Foods(or similar) Ecover, Seventh Generation, and Bio Kleen all make very good delicate cleaners for laundry with no perfumes or dyes.
- Make sure you use the delicate cycle or hand wash if you have the space to do so.
- Do Not Dry in the Dryer!!! This will shrink the garment and over time will break down the fabric , this weakens the weave and runs and rips will happen easily.
- Never HANG to dry. When drying start the process by holding the dress from the top and start twisting it not too hard. Let the excess water drain out by laying the TWISTED dress on a drying rack. Once it is dry to the touch on the outside then un- twist and lay flat to allow it to keep from wrinkling.
- It is best to store your cotton gauze in a zippered garment bag that will fit in a drawer, Hanging these items weakens the fiber and allows the dress to loose the shape you were seeking this dress for. Storing them this way also keeps moths and crickets from finding them. Also Keep some red cedar shavings or blocks in the drawer to drive away moths, and it also gives a nice aroma to your clothes. Avoid artificial scented moth repellents.
Since these items have lasted this long, keep them around for many more years by caring well for all of your vintage clothing!
