Vintage and antique Singer sewing machines are in demand right now. Just a few tips on the cleaning and maintenance of these wonderful machines.
Never us common lubricants like WD-40 and the like. WD-40 and other common lubricants may harden over time and collect dust and dirt, lint and threads as well as gum up the metal parts of the gear driven parts.
Use oils and lubricants specifically made for sewing machines, shop tools and small machinery. The ones offered by 3-in-1 and Singer do not break down or gum up.
If you get a grimy and sluggish machine, drop a few drops where indicated by your manual, get a toothbrush saturated with clean oil and scrub the old stuff off. Let the machine sit for a few minutes and let the new oil work, run the machine and check for dry and gummy areas.
Remove all the unused oil before sewing or you will damage you fabric.
Ask any woodworker how he maintains his saws, sanders, drill presses and lathes!
