Cubic Zirconia (CZ) gemstones have become a fashion staple since their commercial introduction thirty years ago. They are created from the mineral zirconium oxide (not to be confused with zircon), rarely found in nature but widely synthesized laboratories. Contemporary production has resulted in a diamond simulant that may often only be distinguished from a true diamond by experts. A CZ gem does not have the brilliance of a true diamond but greater fire. Usually colorless, they may be produced in a rainbow of colors with the addition of metal oxides. Their hardness, low cost, and durability has made cubic zirconia the finest diamond substitute because its qualities are the closest match to that of a diamond’s characteristics.
To care for cubic zirconia jewelry, remove it when bathing or cleaning; soaps and detergents may leave a dulling film on the surface. Make-up, lotions, face/body powder, and skin oils may also leave a residue. When cleaning is necessary, you may use a mild dishwashing liquid mixed with a little water, and a soft brush, but be sure to rinse the gem well and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. CZ stones may be cleaned with commercially available liquid jewelry dips, but avoid using dips that contain ammonia. Ultrasonic cleaners may also be used and will not damage the stone.
Remove any rings containing CZ gems when doing heavy work. Although they are almost as hard as diamonds, they can be chipped (as will diamonds). Avoid exposing CZ to direct sunlight for long periods of time, as this may cause colored stones to fade.
Cubic zirconia jewelry can be stunning enough for evening wear, and stylish enough for everyday wear. With proper care, cubic zirconia gems will last for many years!
