Candy Land Game - A Guide to Candy Land!
The classic children's board game CANDY LAND was created in 1949 during the time of the polio epidemic in the U.S. The game's creator, Eleanor Abbott, had suffered through polio herself, and she wanted to make a simple game to cheer up children recovering from the disease. When game company MILTON BRADLEY accepted the game, children's history was made.
Perhaps it is the fact that kids have always loved candy that has made the game so popular; or perhaps it is the bright colors, clever names, and easy play that accounts for its enduring place in toy history. Whatever the reason, the CANDY LAND game has sold over 40 million copies, and CD ROM and DVD versions of the classic are now available. You can still buy the original board version, of course, and millions of people do.
As a nostalgic reminder of the sweet innocence of childhood, the CANDY LAND game is something of a phenomenon. Vintage CANDY LAND games with original packaging can be highly prized. The game has undergone a few makeovers in its history, so if you are buying vintage, check to make sure you are getting the version you want.
For CANDY LAND fans who can't get enough of Queen Frostine, there are also associated CANDY LAND activities (e.g., coloring books) that can be purchased. Toy company Hasbro has also made a CANDY LAND movie and provides interactive CANDY LAND activities for kids on its website. Whether you want vintage CANDY LAND or modern computerized versions, it's hard to go wrong with a game that kids of all ages have loved for more than 50 years.
