What better way to personalize the decorations at a wedding than with wedding candles. From the centerpiece on the head table to the unity candle at the wedding table, it's easy to see the importance of wedding candles in the wedding ceremony. And it's not just tradition. Wedding candles help create the right mood and emphasize the spirit that brings people closer during this special occasion.

Unity Candles

The Unity candle is the large candle or candelabra used in the wedding ceremony. The candle holder is typically one piece which holds two tapered candles. The bride and groom each take one lit taper and light the center pillar candle. Many unity candles are elaborately designed to reflect the uniqueness of the wedding and the joining together of two special people.

This focal point for part of the wedding ceremony should be special, yet its appearance should be appropriate and pleasing to the bride and groom. Weddings are meant to be special times so unity candles should be tastefully designed.

Unity candles can be expensive, so you may find homemade unity candles are appropriate for your wedding. Certain molds and manufacturing techniques can produce unity candles that are very sophisticated and beautiful. With the proper molds and instruction, you may be able to make a beautiful, one-of-a-kind candle yourself.

You can even decorate your own candle holder to match the design and texture of the unity candle and tapers. A custom handmade candle may be a very special reminder to the wedding couple for years afterward.

To make a custom unity candle, you'll need:

  • a pillar candle
  • two taper candleholders with two taper candles
  • a copy of a wedding invitation
  • decorative trim
  • low-temp glue gun
  • fancy ribbon bows
  • scissors
  • silk flower embellishments
  • some pictures of unity candles used by others to give you creative ideas

You may want to make your pillar candle yourself using molds, wax, wicks and the candle material of your choosing. The exterior of the pillar candle can be tastefully decorated as well. Certain candle waxes have a translucence that allows the unity candles to glow when lit. And, if you're adept at making personalized bows, you can make very attractive accents for your unity candles.
