Votive candles were originally small. white unscented candles used in religious ceremonies. Today, votives are extremely popular in every colour and scent imaginable.

Votives are small cylindrical candles, usually about an inch and a half in diameter and up to two and a half inches high. Votives are placed in small cups or holders to collect the wax as they burn. Glass is one of the more common votive holders, but many other vessels are also popular.

Candles should always be burned in a heat resistant container, and the flame should not be allowed to get too close to the container, especially glass, which may crack.

Votives are available in traditional paraffin wax and beeswax. A small collection of different coloured votive candles can add a warm, decorative touch, especially in a small room, like a bathroom.

Votive candles will usually have a cored wick. The wick is braided around a core made of zinc, paper or cotton, or a combination of them. The core helps the wick to stand up straight.

While zinc does produce small amounts of lead, the National Candle Association asserts that it is not hazardous.

A selection of different coloured and scented votive candles along with matching votive holders in an attractive cloth box or basket makes a lovely, inexpensive gift for any occasion. Adding any variety of pillar candles, or perhaps an aromatherapy gel candle and bubble bath to the set makes a very nice personal and warm gift for someone special.
