Pillar candles are also called column candles. Despite the name, pillar candles are actually available in a range of shapes aside from a column shape. They can be hexagonal, oval, diamond, square and of any height and diameter.

A pillar candle might also be ornately carved or decorated, or molded into different novelty figurines. Pillar candles are designed to be rigid and self-standing, but placement on a heat-resistant candleholder is still recommended.

A collection of different sized and coloured pillar candles makes a beautiful addition to a room's décor or a centrepiece. When burning several at a time, candles should be situated at least three inches apart from each other.

Pillar candles are made with the traditional paraffin wax or beeswax and are available in a multitude of scents.

The wick in pillar candles will usually be flat or square. Both of these types of wick are designed to curl into themselves for self-trimming. Square wicks are braided and more robust than flat-plaited and are especially preferred in beeswax candles. A well-made wick will make a big difference in the longevity of a pillar candle. A wick that will not curl in on itself will drown in the melting wax.

Multi-wicked pillar candles provide an amazing amount of light and warmth and will last for years if burned properly.

The most popular of pillar candles is probably the wedding candle, which can be inscribed with the wedding date and couple's names and different motifs symbolic of the event.
