Oil candles and lamps offer the soothing glow and warmth of candles but without some of the inconveniences of wax candles, and they last a lifetime. Oil candles come in a huge array of ornamental and decorative pieces that will accent and complement your décor and make a beautiful gift for holidays, birthdays and housewarmings.

Although glass is the most common vessel used for oil candles, they come in an interesting array of other materials, including wood, granite, marble, chrome and brass.

Clear glass in any shape, mason jars filled with herbs, flowers, or elegantly designed coloured glass holders are filled with clear odourless paraffin oil. Oil candles will usually come with a funnel and wick, with the paraffin oil included or sold separately.

Wicks for oil candles are specifically made for the purpose, usually braided fibreglass, and are contained in an eyelet or glass tube to support it within the vessel.

The wick holder in an oil candle should allow some airflow between it and the container, or pressure will build up and result in fuel leakage and potential fires. The positioning of the wick within the holder should be even or just below the top of the holder for a half-inch flame.

Although fibreglass wicks are long-lasting and should not require trimming, a smoking flame from an oil candle may be due to carbon build-up, which can be gently brushed off before lighting.

As with all candles, oil candles should never be left unattended, and they should be burned in a well-ventilated room away from drafts.
