*Vegetarians will need to use more whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, but this higher carbohydrate diet does not really curb yeast as well. Furthermore, vegetarians seem more prone to yeast overgrowth because their diet is more alkaline and sweet, which supports the yeast. Yeast does not grow as well in an acid environment, and thus many of the anti-yeast herbs and medicines are fairly acidic.
Other facets of a good anti-yeast program involve intake of healthy bacteria and probiotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. These help to reduce growth and provide what our colon wants. Also take herbs and medicines that help to kill or inhibit the yeast growth. These include such natural supplements as: garlic, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, plant tannins, caprylic acid (found in cold-pressed coconut oil), berberine (from goldenseal). Pau D' Arco is also popular. A tea made from the bark can be drunk several times per day is popular, it also seems to tone or strengthen the gastrointestinal tract. May also be taken in capsules. Another popular herb is Milk Thistle (Silymarin).
Avoid simple sugars and refined flours. Avoid honey, syrup, fruit juice, turbinado sugar, and so forth. The bulk of your diet should be vegetables, beans, peas, lentils, fish, nuts, and seeds, olive oil, and to a lesser degree whole grains, and high quality meats. Yeast live on mostly simple sugars, yeast, and fermented foods. These include fruits, juices, dried fruits, sugary foods, refined flour products, alcoholic beverages, cheese, vinegar, breads, and other yeasted fermented food products such as soy sauce.
Yogurt is alright, as long as you can tolerate milk. Soy yogurt is good. Fruit, only 1 or 2 pieces per day but no melons, bananas or grapes. Occasionally starch, and pastas, but limited at first. Mostly vegetables and meat, seeds, nuts, beans. Limited legumes because they add to gas. Limited brown rice, millet, oatmeal or corn polenta. Reducing starchy foods does lower the fiber intake, but usually other aspects of the treatment help colon function. The Anti-Yeast diet can also be used to reduce yeast and parasites.
After a few weeks, when symptoms subside, we can test ourselves with fruit, bread, and other grain products, or cheese--of course one food at a time, and only one new one daily-- to see how we handle them.
